General Interest

El Salvador first appeared at the Olympic Games in 1968 in Mexico City, sending a delegation of 60 athletes. Trap shooter Roberto Soundy was the oldest athlete in the El Salvadorian delegation, taking part in his event at age 68 years and 228 days, while swimmer Ruben Ernesto Guerrero was the youngest. He competed in the men's 4x100m freestyle at age 13 years and 351 days. Both athletes still hold the record as the oldest and youngest competitors to have represented El Salvador at the Olympic Games.

The NOC sent athletes to the 1972 Games in Munich, but El Salvador did not compete at the Olympic Games again until 1984 in Los Angeles. The NOC has participated at each edition of the Olympic Games since but athletes from El Salvador are yet to win a medal at the Olympic Games. Track cyclist Maureen Kaila-Vergara came closest by placing fifth in the women's points race in Atlanta 1996.

Another cyclist, Evelyn Garcia, is one of three athletes from El Salvador to have made three Olympic appearances. She competed in track cycling in 2004 and 2008, and also represented El Salvador in the women's road race in 2000 and 2008. Judoka Juan Vargas fought in the men's 73kg category at three editions of the Games between 1984 and 1996, while weightlifter Eva Dimas competed at Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, and Beijing 2008.
