General Interest

Djibouti made its Olympic debut at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles, and has missed only the 2004 Games since. The majority of athletes representing the NOC at the Olympic Games have competed in distance running.

The NOC's sole Olympic medallist, Ahmed Salah, won bronze in the men's marathon in 1988. Salah went on to become Djibouti's most experienced Olympian, competing at four consecutive editions of the Games between 1984 and 1996.

Ayanleh Souleiman came within 0.05 seconds of becoming Djibouti's second Olympic medallist at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He finished fourth in the 1500m final, losing out on bronze in a tight sprint to the line with New Zealander Nicholas Willis. In a slow-paced race, he missed out on gold by just 0.29 seconds.

The NOC's first female representative, Roda Ali Waiss, competed in the 800m at the Sydney 2000 Games as a 16-year-old.

In addition to athletics, Djibouti has also fielded competitors in sailing, judo, swimming and table tennis.
