General Interest
The Democratic Republic of Congo first competed at the Olympic Games in 1968 as Congo Kinshasa. At those first Games, all of its representative athletes were cyclists.
The NOC, then known as Zaire, next sent a team to the 1984 Games and has competed at every edition since, switching its name to the Democratic Republic of Congo from the 2000 Games onwards.
Athletics has been the sport in which the NOC has fielded the most athletes, beginning with Christine Bakombo Kungu - the first woman to represent the NOC - and Masini Situ Kumbanza, both of whom were part of the 1984 team. Kungu Bakombo went on to compete in the 400m and 800m at the 1988 Games and in the marathon in 1992.
Kaleka Mutoke also appeared at three Olympic Games in Democratic Republic of Congo colours, running the marathon, 5000m and 1500m events between 1988 and 1996.
One of the best performers from the NOC is Gary Kikaye. He reached the semifinal of the men's 400m at both the Athens and Beijing Games.
