General Interest

Congo was represented by 10 athletes at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, who competed in table tennis, swimming, judo, athletics, and boxing events. Congo is yet to win a medal at the Olympic Games but shot put athlete Franck Elemba came close at Rio 2016, placing fourth overall and missing out on a bronze medal by just 16 centimetres.

Four competitors share the honour of having represented Congo at three editions of the Olympic Games. Siblings Monika Bakale [1996, 2000, 2004] and Emile Bakale [2004, 2008, 2012] both competed in swimming, while sprinter Theophile Nkounkou represented the NOC at the Games between 1972 and 1984. Table tennis player Suraju Saka competed at consecutive Games between 2008 and 2016, and also holds the distinction of being the oldest Congolese athlete to have participated in the Olympic Games. He was age 40 years and 98 days when he took part in the men's singles competition at Rio 2016.

The first women to represent Congo travelled to the 1980 Games in Moscow, where a team of 14 contested the handball competition.
