General Interest
Colombia sent 147 athletes to the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, which was by far its largest Olympic delegation of athletes. The NOC won three gold medals in Brazil, which included BMX rider Mariana Pajon successfully defending her title from London 2012 in the women's individual event and becoming the first Colombian to win two Olympic gold medals. Also at the 2016 Games, Caterine Ibarguen claimed Colombia's first gold medal in athletics by winning the women's triple jump, and weightlifter Oscar Figueroa secured gold in the men's 62kg category.
Colombia first sent a contingent to the Olympic Games in 1932 in Los Angeles, where Jorge Perry Villate placed 23rd in the men's marathon. Athletes from the NOC have competed at each edition of the Games since, with the exception of 1952 in Helsinki, but it was not until the 1972 Games in Munich that Colombia won its first Olympic medals. Shooter Helmut Bellingrodt became the first Colombian athlete to stand on the podium at an Olympic Games, claiming silver in the 50m running target event, and he was then followed by boxers Alfonso Perez and Clemente Rojas who both secured bronze medals. Bellingrodt would become the NOC's first athlete to win multiple medals by securing bronze in Los Angeles in 1984, again in the 50m running target event.
Boxer Jorge Eliecer Julio Rocha won bronze at Seoul 1988, while Ximena Restrepo finished third in the women's 400m at the 1992 Games in Barcelona. Restrepo's bronze was the first medal of any colour from a Colombian female athlete. Colombia won its maiden Olympic gold medal at the 2000 Games in Sydney, where weightlifter Maria Isabel Urrutia triumphed in the women's 75kg category.
