Team Chinese Taipei - Profile

At the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, Chinese Taipei won one gold and two bronze medals, one of its best overall results at the Olympic Games. Weightlifter Hsu Shu-Ching stepped to the top of the podium in the women's 53kg category for the second consecutive Games. In the process, she won her NOC's third gold medal in the sport.

Chinese Taipei has competed at the Olympic Games since 1956. Between 1956 and 1972 the NOC competed under the name Republic of China. After missing the 1976 and 1980 Games, the NOC returned to the Olympic Games in 1984 under the name Chinese Taipei and has competed under that name since.

In the NOC's 14 Olympic appearances before Tokyo 2020, it has won 24 medals, but only five of them gold. The NOC's first medal, a silver, was won by decathlete Yang Chuan-Kwang at the 1960 Games in Rome. The 1960 Games was his second as he was also in the NOC's 1956 team. He went on to compete in his third successive Games in 1964, finishing fifth in the decathlon and also competing in the pole vault.

Weightlifting is Chinese Taipei's most successful Olympic sport, contributing three of the five gold medals won by the NOC. In addition to the back-to-back gold medals won by Hsu Shu-Ching across the 2012 and 2016 Games, Chen Wei-Ling won the NOC's first gold in the sport in Beijing when she claimed victory in the 48kg category.

Chinese Taipei's two other gold medallist both had their success in taekwondo at the 2004 Games in Athens, helping to making it the NOC's most successful Games. Chu Mu-Yen won the men's flyweight -58kg division and Chen Shih-Hsin won gold in the women's flyweight -49kg.
