Brazil - Profile
General Interest
Brazil hosted the Olympic Games in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, becoming the first South American nation to have held the event. The NOC was represented by 465 athletes at the Games, which was the most Brazilian competitors to have participated in a single edition of the Games. Brazilian athletes won 19 medals in Rio, a total that eclipsed the previous high of 17 from both 2012 and 2008. One notable result from the 2016 Games was the NOC winning its first gold medal in men's football. The Brazilian team, which had claimed silver in 1984, 1988, and 2012, beat Germany on penalties in the final at the Maracana.
Brazil won medals in shooting at its first Olympic Games in 1920 in Antwerp. Guilherme Paraense claimed gold in the men's 25m rapid fire pistol, Afranio Da Costa secured silver in the men's 50m pistol and Brazil won the 50m military revolver team event. The NOC claimed its second Olympic gold medal at the 1952 Games in Helsinki, with Adhemar Ferreira da Silva triumphing in the men's triple jump. He successfully defended his title four years later in Melbourne to become the first Brazilian athlete to win two gold medals at the Olympic Games.
Sailors from Brazil have won seven gold medals at the Olympic Games. Robert Scheidt [1996 - 2016] and Torben Grael [1984 - 2004] share the distinction of being the only Brazilian athletes to have won a total five medals at the Olympic Games. Scheidt is Brazil's most successful Olympian with two gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze medal, while Grael has two gold medals, one silver medal, and two bronze medals. Scheidt and Grael also share the record for most Olympic appearances by a Brazilian athlete with six, along with equestrian jumper Rodrigo Pessoa, women's footballer Formiga, and table tennis player Hugo Hoyama.
At recent editions of the Games, Brazil has been a strong medal contender in volleyball. Since 2004, the men's team has won two gold medals [2004, 2016] and two silver medals [2008, 2012], while the women's team has secured two Olympic titles [2008, 2012].
