General Interest

The 2020 Games in Tokyo is Botswana's 11th consecutive Olympic participation after the NOC made its first appearance in 1980. The majority of competitors representing Botswana at the Olympic Games have competed in athletics.

Nijel Amos won Botswana's first and only Olympic medal, a silver, in the men's 800m at the 2012 Games. Amos was age 18 years and 147 days on the day of the 800m final in London, and his time of 1:41.73 was a world junior record.

Amantle Montsho recorded Botswana's best performance by a female athlete when she finished fourth in the women's 400m final in 2012 in London. She is also the first female athlete from Botswana to have competed at the Olympic Games, achieving the feat upon making her debut at the 2004 Games in Athens.

One of Botswana's top performances at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro came from 400m runner Karabo Sibanda, who placed fifth in the final. Sibanda also ran the second leg for the NOC in the final of the 4x400m, with the Botswana team eventually finishing fifth.
