Belgium - Profile
General Interest
Belgian athletes won two gold medals at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. Greg Van Avermaet claimed victory in the men's cycling road race and Nafissatou Thiam triumphed in the women's heptathlon.
Belgium has competed at every edition of the Olympic Games since 1908. The NOC recorded its best Olympic medal tally as hosts at the 1920 Games in Antwerp where Belgian athletes secured 14 gold medals, including eight in archery. Hubert van Innis claimed four of those gold medals in archery in 1920 to add to the two gold medals he won at the 1900 Games in Paris. He remains the most successful Belgian Olympian with a total of six gold medals.
Belgium has a history of podium finishes in cycling, winning its first medal in track [a bronze] in the 20km race at the 1908 Games in London. The NOC claimed its first road cycling medal, another bronze, in the team time trial at the 1920 Games in Antwerp. In total Belgium has won seven Olympic gold medals across road and track, although the nation experienced a 32-year gold medal drought between Roger Ilegems' points race victory in track at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles and Van Avermaet's road race gold in 2016.
Table tennis player Jean-Michel Saive and shooter Francois La Fortune Jr. share the honour of having made the most Olympic appearances for Belgium. Saive was part of the Belgian delegation at the seven Games between 1988 and 2012, while La Fortune Jr competed in rifle events at seven consecutive editions of the Games between 1952 and 1976. His father Francois La Fortune Sr. has the distinction of being the oldest athlete to have represented Belgium at the Olympic Games, competing in the men's 50m rifle prone at the 1960 Games in Rome at age 64 years and 244 days.
