General Interest

Bahrain had its most successful Olympic Games in 2016, winning two medals. Ruth Jebet claimed gold in the women's 3000m steeplechase and Eunice Jepkirui Kirwa secured silver in the women's marathon.

Bahrain won its first Olympic medal in London in 2012. Maryam Yusuf Jamal initially finished third in the women's 1500m, but was later promoted to the silver medal position after the winner of the race, Turkey's Asli Cakir Alptekin, was disqualified following an anti-doping violation. In 2017 Jamal was upgraded to the gold medal position after another Turkish athlete, Gamze Bulut, was also stripped of her medal, this time for biological passport irregularities.
