Bahamas - Profile
General Interest
The Bahamas won two medals at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, both in athletics. Shaunae Miller-Uibo secured gold in the women's 400m and the men's 4x400m relay team claimed bronze.
The Bahamas' first Olympic medal came in 1956 when sailors Durward Knowles and Sloan Farrington won bronze in the Star class in Melbourne. The pair had represented the Bahamas four years earlier at the 1952 Games in Helsinki, but they competed for Great Britain at the 1948 Games in London because the Bahamas did not have an Olympic association at the time. Knowles and Farrington sailed together again at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, but Knowles was partnered with Cecil Cooke for the 1964 Games in Tokyo. It was here that Knowles and Cooke won the Bahamas' first Olympic gold medal.
Knowles went on to represent the Bahamas at the Olympic Games on a further three occasions, and was age 70 years and 330 days on his seventh [for the Bahamas] and final Olympic appearance at the 1988 Games in Seoul. He is the oldest athlete to have represented the Bahamas at the Olympic Games, and no Bahamian athlete has made more Olympic appearances than him.
Since the NOC's early success in sailing, podium finishes for the Bahamas have come exclusively in athletics. Triple jumper Frank Rutherford was the first competitor from the Bahamas to win a medal in athletics with his bronze at the 1992 Games in Barcelona, which was the Bahamas' first medal of any colour since Knowles and Cooke's gold in 1964.
More recently, sprint events and the 4x400m relay have been a source of success. Sprinter Pauline Davis-Thompson is the only Bahamian athlete to have won two gold medals. Both her golds came at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney - one in the 200m and the other in the 4x100m relay.
