General Interest

Azerbaijan won 18 medals at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, which was easily the NOC's best medal haul since making its Olympic debut in 1996. Taekwondoka Radik Isaev claimed Azerbaijan's sole gold medal in Rio de Janeiro, with seven silver medals and 10 bronze medals making up the rest of the total.

The first competitor from Azerbaijan to win gold was shooter Zemfira Meftakhetdinova, who secured victory in women's skeet at the 2000 Games in Sydney.

Freestyle wrestler Namik Abdullaev won Azerbaijan's first Olympic medal of any colour, a silver in the 55kg category at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. He then became the first male athlete from Azerbaijan to secure Olympic gold by triumphing in the same category four years later in Sydney [nine days after Meftakhetdinova's win in skeet].
