General Interest
Athletics and boxing are Algeria's most successful Olympic sports, with 15 of its 17 medals coming in the two sports.
Algeria's first Olympic gold medal was won by Hassiba Boulmerka in the women's 1500m at the 1992 Games in Barcelona. The victory was the starting point for a streak of Algerian success in the 1500m, with Noureddine Morceli winning men's gold in 1996 and Nouria Merah-Benida triumphing in the women's event four years later in Sydney.
In London in 2012, Taoufik Makhloufi won the men's 1500m despite having been excluded from the Games a day earlier for pulling out of the 800m heats without a valid reason. He later provided a medical certificate from a doctor to confirm a knee problem had forced him to withdraw from the 800m, and his disqualification from the 2012 Games was revoked. Makhloufi claimed silver medals in the 800m and the 1500m in 2016 and became the first Algerian competitor to have won three Olympic medals.
Mustapha Moussa and Mohamed Zaoui won Algeria's first Olympic medals in any sport, with both men claiming bronze in boxing at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. Hocine Soltani is the only Algerian boxer to have claimed multiple Olympic medals, winning bronze in the featherweight division at the 1992 Barcelona Games and then securing gold in the lightweight division four years later in Atlanta.
