General Interest
Albania was represented by a team of four shooters and one weightlifter at its first Games in 1972 in Munich. The NOC did not send a team to the Games again until 1992. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the Albanian team consisted of six athletes that competed in a total of three sports - athletics, swimming and weightlifting.
Albania's best results at the Olympic Games have come in weightlifting. In 2000 Ilirian Suli finished fifth in the men's 77kg event, while Romela Begaj was ranked fifth in the women's 58kg division in 2008. In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Briken Calja equalled those achievements by placing fifth in the men's 69kg category.
In 2016 swimmer Sidni Hoxha competed at his third edition of the Games, equalling the record for most Olympic appearances by an Albanian athlete that was set by 400m runner Klodiana Shala between 2000 and 2008.
