General Interest

Afghanistan has won two Olympic medals since its first Games in 1936, both bronze and both won by taekwondoka Rohullah Nikpai. Nikpai claimed his NOC's first medal in 2008 in the men's -58kg event before moving up a weight division in London to claim another bronze in the 58-68kg class.

In addition to Nikpai's medal-winning performances, Afghanistan's other significant results have also come in combat sports. At the 1964 Games in Tokyo, Mohammud Ibrahim finished fifth in the men's freestyle wrestling 63kg event, an effort which remains one of the best for an athlete from his country. Taekwondoka Nesar Bahawi equalled that result in the 68-80kg division at London 2012.

In 2016, Afghanistan sent three athletes to Rio de Janeiro. Abdul Wahab Zahiri and Kamia Yousufi competed in athletics and Mohammad Tawfiq Bakhshi in judo.

Judoka Friba Razayee and 100m sprinter Robina Muqim Yaar became the first women to represent Afghanistan at the Olympic Games when they competed at the 2004 Games in Athens.
