Despite being hosts, Japan had to qualify for the Olympic Games at the qualification tournament held in Graz, Austria, in May 2021. Only one of the Japanese men's or women's teams were awarded automatic qualification as hosts, and this berth went to the men on account of their higher world ranking. The Japanese women secured the last qualifying spot available in Graz with an overtime win against Spain in third-place play-off.

Japan finished 13th out of 20 teams at the World Cup in both 2019 and 2017, an improvement on their 19th-place finish at the 2016 edition. At the 2019 World Cup in Amsterdam, they lost to France, Australia and Switzerland - by two points in all three matches - and recorded a single win over Andorra during the pool phase. Japan did not progress to the knockout rounds.

The Japanese team have had the most impact at continental level. They won silver at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia, where they were beaten in the gold medal match by the People's Republic of China. In 2019 they ranked third at the Asia Cup in Changsha, People's Republic of China.
