Latvia punched their ticket to Tokyo at the Olympic qualifying tournament held in Graz, Austria, in May 2021. With Poland and the Netherlands claiming the first two qualification berths available in Graz, the Latvian team beat France 21-15 in the last match of the tournament to book their place at the inaugural Olympic 3x3 tournament.

Latvia were runners-up at the 2019 World Cup in Amsterdam. After wins over Australia, Japan, Brazil, Ukraine and Serbia, they lost out to the US team in the final 18-14. Their performance in 2019 continued a trend of improvement for the Latvians at the World Cup, as they finished 18th [2012] and fifth [2018] in their two other tournament appearances.

The Latvian team are regular contenders at continental level, and won the 2017 Europe Cup title in Amsterdam. At the next edition in 2018 they were runners-up behind Serbia, before winning silver at the 2019 European Games following a gold medal match with the Russian Federation. However, at the 2019 Europe Cup, Latvia did not progress beyond the pool phase and ranked 10th.
