His father Ugis Lasmanis has represented Latvia and the Soviet Union in rowing. For Latvia, he competed in single sculls at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona and in double sculls at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. For the Soviet Union, he won silver in double sculls at the 1991 World Championships in Vienna, Austria.
