"I always had a dream of competing at the Olympic Games. I have been very fortunate to have played 5-on-5 basketball on an international level for the Netherlands. In that discipline, it was never really realistic to make it to the Olympic Games. When 3x3 became an Olympic sport, there was a real chance of making it to the Olympics and that was the reason for me to make the switch to 3x3 basketball." General Interest

General
SWITCH TO 3X3 BASKETBALL
He became involved in the Dutch national 3x3 basketball team after his contract with his 5-on-5 basketball club team, Donar, was not renewed. "My wife came up with the idea of calling the national [3x3] team coach about if there was a possibility to join. He gave me a chance to fight for a place on the team and I took it from there. I think my experience in 5x5 basketball has helped me to make a quick transition into 3x3." (dvhn.nl, 13 Mar 2020; omroepwest.nl, 27 Jun 2021; volkskrant.nl, 09 Feb 2020; leidschdagblad.nl, 26 May 2021)

COACHING
He has coached at the Talent Academy Group in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, helping young elite athletes with mental and performance coaching. "I bring in my experience as an elite athlete and help them to improve mentally, in terms of experience and in terms of sacrifice. It's about uncertainties about whether you will be selected, fear of failure, dealing with disappointments and the willingness to get the most out of your career. You would think that every top athlete is aware of his or her own behaviour, but this is not always the case. Based on my own career, I think it's nice to try and help athletes in that process."
