OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES
Competed at the first Olympic women’s ice hockey tournament at Nagano 1998, with wins against Japan (6-1) and Sweden (3-1). Faced Finland in the bronze medal match and despite China scoring first, Finland scored three goals in the second period, en route to a 4-1 victory. Since then, China has won only two games in the Olympic tournament, defeating Kazakhstan (2002) and Slovakia (2010) in the seventh-place playoff.
Failed to qualify for Sochi 2014 and PyeongChang 2018, eliminated in the third preliminary round of qualification after losing all three matches.
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Competed in the top division from 1992 to 2009, finishing fourth in 1994 and 1997. Both years they lost to the United States in the semifinals and Finland in the third-place match.
Winless in 2009, they were relegated to Division I, and after a three-way tie for last in 2011, were relegated again to Division I B on goals. Missed promotion in 2012 after another three-way tie was decided on goals, and have remained in Division I B since, finishing middle of the table.
Note: All lower division championships have been cancelled the past two seasons due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
ASIAN WINTER GAMES
Collected a medal at every Asian Winter Games, since women’s ice hockey was included in 1996. After winning the first two editions, they finished third three times, before collecting a silver medal in 2017, losing to gold medallists Japan, and to Republic of Korea in a penalty shoot-out.
QUALIFICATION
Qualified for Beijing 2022 as the host nation.
