Father Frits Nielsen (Ice hockey): Six World Championship appearances (Pool B & C) from 1973-81. Played professionally in Denmark, winning the league championship twice (1973, 1981), and was named the Danish League Player of the Year twice (1976, 1985), leading the league in goals, points and assists on several occasions. Head coach of Herning IK from 1982-96, winning the championship five times. Inducted into the Danish Ice Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015.

Brother Simon Nielsen (Ice hockey): U18 World Championship gold medallist in 2003 (IA), adding U20 silver in 2006 (IA) and bronze in 2005 (IB). Eleven World Championship appearances, being the first-choice goaltender in 2013 and 2014. Danish League champion in 2003 with Herning Blue Fox, and Danish Cup winner in 2008 with Rodovre Mighty Bulls. Finished third during the 2013/14 SM-liiga season in Finland with Luko. Retired in 2021 with Herning Blue Fox, returning to the club in 2015.
