"As a child, I used to play outdoor games with boys from the neighbourhood. I wanted to come to the NHL because all the guys I played with had that as a goal. However, it was during the Nagano Olympics in 1998, while watching women’s ice hockey matches on TV for the first time, when I got the feeling of, 'Wow, I want to play there while representing Finland.'" (hockeysverige.se, 11 Sep 2019; goodnewsfinland.com, 1 Mar 2018)

"I want to be better all the time. So I like to watch my own shifts from previous games, and also see how other defenders play. I work with my shooting a lot. I like to use my slap shot and one-timers." (theicegarden.com, 14 Oct 2018)

"Winning the first World Championships bronze medal [in 2004], and especially the moment when I witnessed what it meant for my more experienced teammates to win the medal. Winning Olympic bronze medals have been great moments as well. The fact that you can share these emotional moments on ice with good friends is great." (goodnewsfinland.com, 1 Mar 2018)

General Interest

HOME HEARTBREAK
Involved in a controversial no-goal call in the final of the 2019 World Championships in Espoo. After Petra Nieminen (FIN) slotted the winning goal 11:33 into overtime, officials spent more than 10 minutes reviewing the play, before deciding that Hiirikoski made incidental contact with US goaltender Alex Rigsby, negating the goal. The United States then killed two powerplays and won their fifth consecutive gold medal in a shootout (2-1). (thestar.com, 14 Apr 2019)

GOING PRO
Signed a professional contract with Swedish club Lulea HF in 2016, allowing her to focus on playing hockey. While previously playing in Finland, she ran her own painting and decorating business “so I can buy food and pay the bills.” (yle.fi, 2 May 2019)
