General Interest

NAME
His father named him Ma Xiuyue, which means unique jade and musical instruments. (163.com, 27 Jan 2022)

TUCK SLIDE
Slides in a hybrid tuck delivery, a style largely restricted to the Canadian province of Manitoba. Typically this delivery applies stress to the knee. Ma researched the style and adopted it to minimise the stress on his knee, similar to Danish third Mads Norgaard. (163.com, 27 Jan 2022)

THE ELDER
He is the oldest member of the national team. Apart from appearances at the World Junior Championships and Winter Universiade (2011-13) his only recent high-profile international event prior to Beijing 2022 was a 2018 appearance in one leg of the Curling World Cup series.

LADIES FIRST
The sixth round of the Chinese Olympic Trials saw Ma battle the eventual women’s team selection. Han Yu’s women’s team scored four points in the second end, and Ma’s team replied with two in the third. At the halfway point, Han led 5-4. The see-saw battle continued to the final end, when the women scored one for an 8-7 victory over the men.
