Began curling at age five on hockey ice in Bendigo, VIC. “I remember being picked up at school and taken to go curling. For a while I was sitting on top of the stone and dad would push me down the sheet. That was fun.” (Athlete, 19 Dec 2022)

“One of the biggest things for me in the past few years is not being afraid of making mistakes. It’s the old Wayne Gretzky kind of thing, ‘You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.’ So if you go out there and dedicate yourself to it, even if you make a mistake it’s okay, you won’t regret that because at least you’ve tried your hardest.” (Athlete, 19 Dec 2022)

General Interest

CURLING CHALLENGES
Until 2009, curling in his Victoria district took place only twice each year, located two hours away in Bendigo. Since 2010 the sport has been accessible once a week (Mondays from 7-10 pm) at the Ice Rink facility in Melbourne.

FOUR YEARS EARLY
Remembers recruiting his teammate in a 2017 phone call. Their common goal was to attempt to qualify for the Olympic Winter Games but the more likely target was Milan-Cortina 2026.

AWFUL ICE
“The ice in Australia is mostly used for skating and ice hockey, which cuts up the ice, making it bumpy and unpredictable. It’s like trying to prepare for Test-match cricket on a beach. When we are in Australia we have to find innovative ways to train. I’ll literally practice my sweeping in the kitchen by doing 20-25 second intervals of a sweeping sprint.” (sbs.com.au, 20 Dec 2021)

BUILDING A FACILITY
“That is one of our biggest goals. Regardless of what happens (in Beijing), my biggest hope is that we can get a dedicated curling rink built in Australia. That is so crucial for us, and the development of the sport.” (Athlete, 19 Dec 2022)

BRUSHING POWER
“Sweeping takes a massive physical toll. It’s like doing a 20-second sprint with your arms over and over. In doubles, I’ll sweep about 40 rocks in a game and a few more in practice. I might sweep 100 rocks in a day. These brooms are getting better and better, they are fully carbon fibre now, mine weighs about 290g. It’s basically a feather. But it’s about putting all of your body weight onto the broom head while moving as quickly as you can.” (smh.com.au, 12 Nov 2021)

FOOTBALL SPORT SCIENCE
Did an internship with the Sport Science Department of Geelong Football Club in 2015. This involved collection and analysis of GPS and heart rate data to inform selection, training loads and future training.

BLESSING IN DISGUISE
Missed a chance to go to the World Men’s Curling Championship in 2017, which prompted him to switch to mixed doubles. “That’s probably the best thing that could have happened to me. It gave me the know-how of what’s needed to make final shots like that.” (Athlete, 19 Dec 2022)
