OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES HISTORY
Uzbekistan made its Olympic debut at Lillehammer 1994, where freestyle skier Lina Cheryazova won gold in the aerials, the only winter medal won by Uzbekistan to date.
Later that year, Cheryazova fractured her skull during training and was in a coma for more than a month. After more than a year of recovery, Cheryazova returned to the sport in the autumn of 1995, but never returned to her previous level. She retired following another injury sustained after the Nagano 1998 Olympic Winter Games.
In seven appearances, Uzbekistan has had 22 Winter Olympians (12 men, 10 women). Figure skater Tatyana Malinina finished eighth in the women's event in 1998.
Uzbekistan has competed at all Olympic Games from 1996 to 2020, and has won 37 medals, 11 of them gold. The most medals won by an Uzbeki was by judoka Rishod Sobirov who won three consecutive bronze medals (2008, 2012, 2016).
