OLYMPIC GAMES HISTORY
Serbia has had 17 Winter competitors (11 men, six women) who have appeared in Alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsleigh, cross-country skiing and snowboarding. Its best finishes have been Nevena Ignjatovic's 14th in women's Alpine combined (2018) and 18th by its 4-man bobsleigh team in 2010.
Ninety-six years separate Serbia's first and second Olympic appearances. It first competed at the Stockholm 1912 Olympic Games, when it fielded a marathon runner and a 100m sprinter.
After the break-up of Yugoslavia, and later the secession of Montenegro in 2006 from Serbia and Montenegro, Serbia competed independently for the second time at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, where it won three medals. Its most notable performance in Beijing was achieved by swimmer Milorad Cavic, who was beaten by Michael Phelps by one one-hundredth of a second in the 100m butterfly. In 2012 Milica Mandic won Serbia's first gold medal in the women's taekwondo heavyweight class.
Serbia has won 24 Olympic medals (six golds), including three medals in men's water polo, highlighted by a gold medal in 2016.
