OLYMPIC GAMES HISTORY
The Nigerian National Olympic Committee was formed in May 1951 and recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) the same year. Nigeria first competed at the Helsinki 1952 Olympic Games and has since only missed the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games.
The country made its Olympic Winter Games debut at PyeongChang 2018 with a team of four female sliders, three in bobsleigh and one in skeleton. Nigeria has not yet had a male Winter Olympian, one of only six nations to be represented at the Olympic Winter Games by women only (also Honduras, Malta, Paraguay, Singapore, and Togo).
In the 2-woman bobsleigh at PyeongChang 2018, pilot Seun Adigun previously competed at the London 2012 Olympic Games in the 100m hurdles. Adigun's brakeperson for the first two runs was Akuoma Omeoga. She was replaced on the final two runs by Ngozi Onwumere.
The nation has won 27 medals at the Olympic Games (three gold). Its first two gold medals came at Atlanta 1996, when long jumper Chioma Ajunwa and the "Super Eagles" (the Nigerian football team) became Olympic champions. The third gold medal came at Sydney 2000 in the men's 4x400m relay, but Nigeria was not awarded this medal until 2008 when the USA team was disqualified for a doping violation.
