OLYMPIC GAMES HISTORY
Kazakhstan's National Olympic Committee was recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1992 shortly after the break-up of the Soviet Union (USSR) and first competed as an independent nation at the Lillehammer 1994 Olympic Winter Games, where cross-country skier Vladimir Smirnov won three medals (one gold, two silver). Smirnov has won the most medals for Kazakhstan, with four of the nation's eight total. Prior to competing for Kazakhstan, Smirnov won three medals for the Soviet Union at the Calgary 1988 Olympic Winter Games.
Kazakhstan has won a total of 80 medals, with 16 gold.
Many Kazakh athletes competed from 1952 to 1988 for the Soviet Union, and Kazakh athletes were present at Barcelona and Albertville in 1992 as members of the Unified Team. During this time the most successful Kazakhs have been the gymnast Valery Lyukin (two gold, two silver in 1988), the volleyballer Nina Smoleyeva (two gold, one silver between 1968 and 1976), the sprinter Vladimir Muravyov (two gold in 1980 and 1988) as well as the wrestler Valery Rezantsev, who twice won gold in the Greco-Roman light-heavyweight class (1972, 1976).
