OLYMPIC GAMES HISTORY
Though Italy did not form a National Olympic Committee until 1908, Italians have competed at every edition of the Olympic Games since 1896.
The nation has won 124 Olympic Winter Games medals with 40 gold. Its top sports have been cross-country skiing (35 medals, nine gold), Alpine skiing (32 medals, 14 gold), and luge (17 medals, seven gold), with its most successful Olympians being cross-country skier Stefania Belmondo, with 10 medals, and short track speed skater Ariana Fontana, with eight. Alpine skiers Alberto Tomba and Deborah Compagnoni have both won three gold medals.
At the Olympic Winter Games at Sochi 2014, luger Armin Zoeggeler became the first athlete at either the Olympic or Olympic Winter Games to win a medal at six consecutive Games in the same individual event. He had previously won gold in 2002 and 2006, silver in 1998 and two bronze medals in 1994 and 2010. His tally of six Olympic medals is also a record for luge.
Italy has had success in many different sports, winning 742 Olympic medals, with 257 gold medals, and has often been the dominant country in cycling and fencing. Fencer Edoardo Mangiarotti has won the most medals of any Italian Olympian, with 13. He is trailed by female cross-country skier, Stefania Belmondo, who has won 10. Both Mangiarotti and fencer Nedo Nadi have won six gold medals, while female fencer Valentina Vezzali joined them in 2012 by winning her sixth gold medal.
