OLYMPIC GAMES HISTORY
Although Iran was represented in 1900 by a fencer, Prince Firidun Malkom, their National Olympic Committee was formed in 1947 and granted recognition that same year.
Iran first competed at the Olympic Winter Games at Cortina d'Ampezzo 1956, then participated from 1964-76, and finally has competed at every Winter celebration since Nagano 1998, for 11 appearances in all.
They have had 25 Winter Olympians (21 men, four women), all competing in either Alpine or cross-country skiing, with their best finishes being 30th in men's slalom skiing at Nagano 1998 by Hassan Shemshaki, with Mohammad Kiyadarbandsari achieving the same result at Sochi 2014.
Alpine skier Marjan Kalhor became Iran's first woman to compete at Vancouver 2010 and was given the honour of carrying the Iranian flag at the Opening Ceremony.
Apart from boycotting the Olympic Games of 1980 and 1984, Iran has competed at every Olympic Games since it made its Olympic debut as a team in 1948. Virtually all of Iran's success has come in the strength or combative sports of weightlifting, wrestling, and taekwondo. It has won 76 Olympic medals (24 gold) with 47 medals (11 gold) won in wrestling, 20 (nine gold) won in weightlifting and six (two gold) in taekwondo.
Three Iranian Olympians have won three medals: Hadi Saei (taekwondo), Mohammad Nassiri (weightlifting), and Gholam Reza Takhti (wrestling). Two Iranians have won two gold medals: Saei and Hossein Reza Zadeh in super-heavyweight weightlifting in 2000 and 2004.
