OLYMPIC GAMES HISTORY
Hungary attended the first Olympic Games at Athens 1896, as it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. A National Olympic Committee was formed in Hungary in 1895 by Dr. Ferenc Kemeny, one of the founding members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Hungary has missed only the Olympic Games at Antwerp 1920 and Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games.
Hungary has competed at every Olympic Winter Games from 1924 to 2018, winning seven Winter Olympic medals, but never more than one at a single Games. The first six medals were won in pairs figure skating. In 2018, Hungary's men's short track speed skating relay team won its first gold medal at the Olympic Winter Games.
Hungary has won 518 Olympic medals, including 182 gold - the most medals and gold medals won by a nation that has not yet hosted an Olympic Games.
The country has been successful in a variety of sports, but by far its greatest honours have come in fencing. Between 1908 and 1960 it was the dominant nation in sabre fencing, winning nine of 11 team titles and 10 of 11 individual titles.
Two Hungarian Olympians have won 10 medals: Agnes Keleti in gymnastics and Aladar Gerevich in fencing. Gerevich won seven gold medals, while three Hungarians have won six gold medals: Pal Kovacs and Rudolf Karpati, both in fencing, and Danuta Kozak in sprint canoeing.
