OLYMPIC GAMES HISTORY
The National Olympic Committee of Croatia was formed in 1991 and provisionally recognised by the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1992, allowing it to make its Olympic debut at the Albertville 1992 Olympic Winter Games.
Croatia has gone on to compete at every Olympic Winter Games since, with its athletes appearing in eight disciplines - Alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsleigh, cross-country skiing, figure skating, luge, skeleton and snowboarding.
Croatia has had 62 Winter Olympians (42 men, 20 women) and has won 11 Winter Olympic medals (four gold). All the gold medals, and six medals overall, have been won by Alpine skier Janica Kostelic, who is the most successful Croatian Olympian, winter or summer. Her brother, Ivica Kostelic, contributed four silver medals in Alpine skiing, giving the Kostelic family 10 of Croatia's 11 Olympic Winter Games medals. The remaining bronze medal was won by biathlete Jakov Fak at Vancouver 2010 (sprint).
Croatian athletes have won 52 Olympic medals, including 18 gold. Of these, 41 medals were won in the summer edition of the Olympic Games, with 14 gold.
At its first Olympic Games as an independent nation (Barcelona 1992), Croatia's basketball team won a silver medal, losing to the United States in the gold medal match.
