OLYMPIC GAMES HISTORY
Although the current NOC was recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1979, the first Chinese Olympic Committee was formed in 1910 and recognised in 1922. It participated at the Olympic Games of 1932, 1936 and 1948, competing under the name of the People's Republic of China for the first time at the Helsinki 1952 Olympic Games.

Since returning to the Olympic Movement at Lake Placid 1980 (although not competing at Moscow 1980), it has competed at all Olympic Games and Olympic Winter Games since 1984 and has won 62 medals and 13 golds at the Olympic Winter Games. Its most successful Winter Olympian has been short track speed skater Wang Meng, who won four golds, one silver, and one bronze (2006, 2010).

Short track has been its best sport at the Olympic Winter Games, with 33 medals and 10 gold medals. Short track skater Yang Yang (A) was its first athlete to win a gold medal at the Olympic Winter Games, triumphing in the women's 500m at Salt Lake City 2002. Yang also secured gold in the 1000m event in 2002.

Its women have outperformed its men at the Olympic Winter Games, having won 40 medals, compared with 16 by men (six won in mixed events).

The NOC has won 696 Olympic medals, 275 of them gold, all since 1980. Its athletes excel in gymnastics, table tennis, diving and swimming. Its most successful athlete has been the female diver Wu Minxia, who won five gold, one silver, and one bronze (2004-16).
