OLYMPIC GAMES HISTORY
After independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, an Azerbaijani National Olympic Committee was established in September 1992 and though they had already applied for recognition in January 1992, full recognition followed at the IOC Session in Monte Carlo in September 1993, making their debut at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games and competing at every Games since.

They sent a small team of figure skaters to the Nagano 1998 Olympic Winter Games, and since have had 13 athletes to date (eight men, five women). They have been represented in figure skating at each edition of the Olympic Winter Games since then, except Vancouver 2010. Ice dancing husband and wife couple Kristin Fraser and Igor Lukanin competed at consecutive Olympic Winter Games (2002, 2006), while Yuliya Zlobina and Aleksey Sitnikov were ranked 12th in the ice dancing at Sochi 2014, the nation's best finish to date.

The other Olympic Winter sport in which Azerbaijani athletes have competed is Alpine skiing, with Gaia Bassani and Jedrij Notz becoming the first Alpine skiers to represent Azerbaijan at the Olympic Winter Games at Vancouver 2010.

Azerbaijan has won 41 medals at the Olympic Games, with seven gold. The most successful athletes have been the freestyle wrestlers Namiq Abdullayev and Togrul Asgarov, who won a gold and a silver medal each.

One athlete has won four medals for Azerbaijan, wrestler Mariya Stadnik with two silvers and two bronzes (2008-20). Irina Osipenko-Radomska won five medals in sprint canoe, including bronze in 2016 for Azerbaijan, while her first four medals came while representing Ukraine (2004-12).

From 1952-88 athletes from Azerbaijan formed part of the Soviet Union Olympic team and at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games, four Azerbaijani athletes were chosen for the Unified Team. During this time the most successful Azerbaijanis were volleyballer Inna Ryskal (two golds and two silvers between 1964 and 1976), gymnast Valery Belenky (one gold and one silver in 1992), and sprinter Yury Konovalov (two silvers in 1956 and 1960).

Baku, Azerbaijan's capital and largest city, bid to host the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games, but did not advance to the final round of voting.
