OLYMPIC GAMES HISTORY
Although Argentina had a founding member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), it did not have a National Olympic Committee until the 1920s. Argentina first competed officially at the Paris 1924 Olympic Games and has competed at every Olympic Games with the exception of 1980. Prior to that, at least three Argentine athletes had competed at the Olympic Games - fencer Francisco Camet in 1900, figure skater Horatio Torrome in 1908, and boxer Angel Rodriguez in 1920.
Argentina competed at the Olympic Winter Games of 1928, 1948, 1952 and every Games since 1960. Although Argentina is most famous athletically for its footballers, at the Olympic Winter Games it has competed in nine disciplines - Alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsleigh, cross-country skiing, figure skating, freestyle skiing, luge, skeleton and snowboarding.
The nation has had 142 Winter Olympians (110 men, 32 women), is yet to win a Winter Olympic medal, but have had four top-10 finishes. In 1928 two Argentine bobsleigh teams finished fourth and fifth in the 5-man event, in 1952 their 4-man bobsleigh team placed eighth, and in 1908 Torrome finished seventh in men's figure skating. The top finish by an Argentine woman came at Salt Lake City 2002 when Alpine skier Macarena Simari Birkner placed 17th in women's combined.
The Birkners and Simari Birkners represent the first family of Argentine Olympians, mostly in Alpine skiing. In addition to Macarena, who competed at the 2002, 2010 and 2014 Olympic Winter Games, her sister, Maria Belen Simari Birkner competed at three Games (2002-10), and their brother, Cristian Simari Birkner, competed four times (2002-14). Other Winter Olympians in the family include their aunt Carolina Birkner (1988) and her twin brother, Ignacio Birkner (1988); their uncle, Jorge Birkner (1984-88) and his son Jorge Birkner (2014). Their cousins, Bautista and Francisco Saubidet, windsurfed at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Argentina has won more Olympic Games gold medals (21, 74 in total) than any other South American country except Brazil.
Argentina won its first Olympic medal at the Paris 1924 Olympic Games when triple jumper Luis Brunetto claimed silver in the men's event before the men's polo team won all four of their matches to seal gold in a round-robin competition. Two Argentines have won four medals: sailor Carlos Espinola from 1996 to 2008 (two silvers in windsurfing, two bronzes in multihull Tornado class), and Lucha Aymar won two silvers and two bronzes in hockey (2000-12). Footballer Javier Mascherano is the only Argentine to have won two gold medals (2004, 2008).
