Pretty much everyone is an Olympic and world finalist.'

Her mother Sandy competed as an age-group triathlete at the 2005 Ironman World Championships in Kailua-Kona, HI, USA. 'You can't be constantly shaken by a bad workout, and you also have to keep it fun, joyful, and exciting. Focus on what you're doing well and what's allowing you to grow.'

She is influenced by her mother and her father, a former middle-distance runner. 'Their teachings go beyond athletics. I have a great understanding with dad. One look is enough and we understand each other immediately.'
First-time Olympian. Finished 9th at 2019 WCh. Placed 2nd at 2021, 2019 NCh, 3rd in 2018, 4th in 2017. In other events - silver in 10000m at 2021 NCh. She is superstitious and said: 'I always have to call my grandpa the night before [a competition]. I always have to wear my hair a certain way. I always say a quick prayer, but it can't be before I get out.'

Aims for unique treble by adding 1500m to her 2020 OG programme, which already includes 5000m, 10000m. 'For me it is crucial to follow my heart. Doing that is far more important than gold medals.'

Her gold in individual event at 2015 World Cross-Country Ch made her the youngest individual women's gold medallist at the event since South African-born Zola BUDD in 1985.

She took up running at age 15 while growing up in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. 'I didn't run until I was 15. I loved running in the mountains, but only for leisure. My school figured out that I was a good runner and asked me to participate in a national project for runners.'
