Her mother Sandy competed as an age-group triathlete at the 2005 Ironman World Championships in Kailua-Kona, HI, USA. 'You can't be constantly shaken by a bad workout, and you also have to keep it fun, joyful, and exciting. Focus on what you're doing well and what's allowing you to grow.'

She is influenced by her mother and her father, a former middle-distance runner. 'Their teachings go beyond athletics. I have a great understanding with dad. One look is enough and we understand each other immediately.'

She is superstitious and said: 'I always have to call my grandpa the night before [a competition]. I always have to wear my hair a certain way. I always say a quick prayer, but it can't be before I get out.'

She took up running at age 15 while growing up in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. 'I didn't run until I was 15. I loved running in the mountains, but only for leisure. My school figured out that I was a good runner and asked me to participate in a national project for runners.'
