She grew up on a dairy farm in Montgomery, VT, United States of America. Starting at about 05:00 or 06:00, she would milk between 30 and 40 cows before going to school. She is still based in her hometown.

Finished 14th in 5000m at 2019 WCh. Her mother has competed in marathon races at national level in Japan, father Katsutoshi has competed in athletics at club level in Japan. She began the sport at age three.

In other events - fourth in 1500m at 2021 European Indoor Ch. An injury in her patella [kneecap] in 2020 limited her training during the season.
Qualified 7th from SF. Finished 7th at 2016 OG. Placed 5th at 2019 and 2015 WCh, 4th in 2017. Silver at 2018 Indoor WCh. Gold at 2018 European Ch, 13th in 2014. She is a qualified vet. 'Deciding to leave veterinary behind has been hard. I did seven years at vet school when I didn't think about athletics, but I realise I've only got a 10-year window in which to give athletics my all.'

She attended the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens as her father worked as an FBI security liaison officer, and was inspired to take up athletics after watching Moroccan runner Hicham EL GUERROUJ (MAR) win gold in both the 1500m and 5000m.
