There's so many strong athletes in Ethiopia so it's a challenge to compete, so that's also why I changed.'

She was a talented football [soccer] player as a child and admires USA star Mia HAMM. 'I played soccer and used it [running] to become a better soccer player, but during high school I started to enjoy the game less and running more, so I made the switch.'

'When you train with men they will push you so when it comes to racing ladies competing will be easier.'

Making OG debut. Finished 88th in 2016 OG qualifier. World ranking of 145 in 2019. In other events - 17th in marathon at 2017 WCh, 10th in half marathon at 2016 WCh. Finished 2nd in Nagoya Marathon in 2020 and 2017. Finished 13th in London Marathon in 2019, 3rd in Osaka Marathon in 2018.
Finished 7th at 2017 WCh. In other events - won individual long distance at 2017 World Cross Country Ch, won team long distance in 2017 and 2013. Finished 2nd at FBK-Games on 2016 World Challenge Tour. She collapsed after finishing the 3000m at the 2013 London Anniversary Games. She had oxygen administered on the track and was rushed to hospital. She regained consciousness while in hospital.

Gold at U23 European Cross Country Ch in 2017, 2016. After she did not make the GBR team for the 2016 OG, she renewed a coaching partnership with her father Mick. 'I was so grateful my dad wanted to take me on again.'
Making OG debut. Finished 3rd at 2021 NCh. In 2021, she was hospitalised with hyperthermia after competing in the USA Olympic trials. 'I was 94 degrees [fahrenheit] when they took my temperature. That was scary, my body was totally in shock. By the next day, the cardiologist said, 'All that really happened was you had heat exhaustion and you really needed fluids'.'

Her father Peter competed in the 3000m steeplechase at the 1991 WCh.

First-time Olympian. In other events - gold in team long distance at 2019 World Cross Country Ch, bronze in individual long distance. Placed 5th at Lievin on 2021 World Indoor Tour. Her training in 2020 was affected by the outbreak of the Tigray War in Ethiopia. 'I never stopped my training since the beginning of Covid but I had to stop my training for a little bit when the war started.'
Finished 14th at 2016 OG. Placed 7th at 2019 WCh, 5th in 2017, 10th in 2015. Silver at 2018 European Ch. In other events - 8th in 5000m at 2016 OG. Finished 8th in 5000m at 2017, 2015, 2013 WCh. Placed 2nd in 3000m at 2018 London Grand Prix. In 2019 she was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame at Florida State University in the United States of America.

Her husband Maru TEFERI, who was also born in Ethiopia, has represented Israel in long-distance running, competing at 2016 OG and 2020 World Half Marathon Championships. 'I didn't run until I was 15. I loved running in the mountains, but only for leisure.'
In other events - 9th in 5000m at 2020 OG. Placed 4th at Ready Steady Tokyo on 2021 World Athletics Continental Tour. Bronze in team long distance at 2019 Junior World Cross Country Ch. Gold in 1500m at 2018 Junior Asian Ch. She took up the sport in grade seven at Sakuragahara Junior High School. She considers a hat her mother bought for her in middle school as her lucky charm.
In other events - 16th in 1500m at 2016 OG. Bronze in 5000m at 2019 WCh, 16th in 1500m in 2017. Placed 7th in 3000m at 2018 Indoor WCh. Won mile event at Birmingham Grand Prix in 2019 Diamond League. She has studied sports journalism at the German Sport University in Cologne, and hopes to one day work in the industry. 'I could imagine a job as a TV presenter or sports reporter.'

She does not wear her watch or her necklace when competing, even though she wears them during training. This is because she is distracted by them when she is racing due to their weight.

Her grandfather Frank worked as a high school cross-country coach for over 40 years. 'I always called my grandpa any time I had something bothering me or if I was nervous. He always has a way to calm my nerves down and make me feel a lot better.'

She was forced to abandon the 10,000m final at the 2017 WCh in London, England, due to an injury. 'I go into the 10,000m with the mentality that it is a road race, you cannot check the clock every lap because then you lose focus.'

Considered quitting the sport in 2013 after a training camp. 'I would always be left behind during our training. I decided to go back home for one year where I used to train just to keep fit.'
DNF at FBK-Games on 2021 World Athletics Continental Tour. In other events - 15h in 5000m at 2020 OG, 23rd in 2016. Placed 13th in 5000m at 2019 WCh, 23rd in 2017. Won NCh in 2018, 2017 and 2016, 2nd in 2019. In 2017 she moved from Toronto, Canada to Melbourne, Australia, when her partner got a job there. 'I knew I wanted to join the Melbourne Track Club. It's just a phenomenal group.'

Was suspended from school for refusing to run in physical education class. 'I really did not like racing. I brought my parents to school to talk to the headmaster. He agreed to reinstate me only if I ran for the school.'

Silver in individual long distance at 2019 European Cross Country Ch, bronze in 2018. Bronze in 3000m steeplechase at 2018 European Ch. Took on a new coach Knut Jaeger HANSEN (NOR) after 2019 WCh. 'I feel what I needed was a little more enjoyment in training.'

Gold in 5000m at 2014 European Ch, silver in 2016. She previously competed for Eritrea but obtained Swedish citizenship in December 2013. 'It was one of the best days of my life. At first I did not believe it was true. It felt unbelievable.'
