He took up wrestling at age five in Aspropyrgos, Greece. "I remember like it was today the first time I went to training. I was playing in the neighbourhood, I was five years old and they said to me, 'Georgios, let's go'. I remember how much I enjoyed it. "My grandfather brought me into the sport. He started wrestling in the Soviet Union and passed the wrestling bug on to his son. Then the older brother to the younger one, and finally it reached me. I made my grandfather's dream come true. As soon as I started going to tournaments, the first victories came immediately, and I said I have to keep going. The victories made me believe in myself."
