His sister Leidy Marcela has represented Colombia in freestyle wrestling, and competed at the world championships on four occasions between 2013 and 2018. His brother Mario Izquierdo has worked as a coach of the Colombia wrestling team, while his uncle Luis Fernando Izquierdo represented Colombia in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. His father Carlos has also competed in the sport at an elite level. The sport was popular in his family. "I wanted to be a footballer. I used to play football all day long in the neighbourhood. My brother told me try wrestling one day, and if I didn't like it I could just leave. I went and wrestled against his trained kids, I beat everybody and I said, 'This is for me.'"
