He practised traditional Senegalese wrestling growing up before switching to freestyle wrestling at age 15 in Kabrousse, Senegal. "There is a nuance between Olympic and traditional wrestling. Senegal is great in the traditional one. But we chose to also practise the Olympic wrestling, perhaps to give the country a broader sense of the sport. At age 15 my coaches decided to take me to another direction and I have since embarked on Olympic wrestling."
