He took a three-month break from the sport after losing in the final at the 2018 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. He then made the decision to move from his long-time training facility at Ohio State to join Nittany Lion Wrestling Club at Penn State University in October 2019. "As wrestlers, this sport is about exhausting yourself of all options to increase your likelihood of improvement. Ohio State is one of the best places you can go as athlete to train, but I think the change of scenery and the change of eyes on me with the different training partners and coaches that I can have at the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club is going to put me at ease, at least knowing that I tried that option. I'm not the type of guy that is afraid to make difficult decisions, and I don't want to look back at my career and say I didn't do something because of public perception and their reactions. At age 19 years and 295 days he became the youngest US freestyle wrestler to have won gold at the world championships when he claimed victory in the 97kg category at the 2015 edition of the tournament in Las Vegas, NV, United States of America.
