She took up wrestling in her junior year at high school after switching from athletics. (olympics.nbcsports.com, 18 Sep 2019)
:
She was tired of running on the school's track team. "I used to get suspended a lot in middle school and high school for fighting because people used to bully me and I don't like being bullied. I was tired of running track so I wanted to try out for a different team. Since I was already fighting I figured I might as well go out for wrestling. I wouldn't get suspended and it's a good way to channel my anger. I started wrestling and I was a natural at it because I like to fight. I think that's where everything came into place. I like to fight already, I was aggressive, and it helped me channel my anger." (trackwrestling.com, 24 Feb 2020)

RIO HEARTBREAK
After injuring her knee in mid-2015, she did not recover in time for the US trials for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro despite nine months of rehabilitation. "They [the doctors] told me it would be safer if I didn't go [to the US trials]. That crushed me. I worked so incredibly hard for nine months only to be told I can't do it. It was physically and emotionally painful. My dream was to make the [2016] US Olympic team and it just didn't happen. I didn't even get a chance to try. I had to think back and reflect on myself." (teamusa.org, 02 Feb 2018; teamusa.org, 18 Sep 2019)

UNORTHODOX STYLE
She describes her style as unorthodox, having changed her lead leg after surgery on her knee injury in 2015. "I would say my wrestling style is unorthodox because I shoot to both sides and I don't really have a lead leg. My left leg used to be my lead leg, but then I had surgery, so my right leg turned into my lead leg. So, I don't really have a set or go-to stuff, I just do whatever."
