He originally got involved in karate while in primary school and earned a black belt. However, his father encouraged him to take up wrestling alongside his two brothers, who had already competed in the sport. "I wasn't really into wrestling. But there weren't many karate tournaments, so one day I participated in a wrestling tournament. When I won at my first event, my coach told me that I wouldn't be able to quit the sport. At that time, my older brother's best result was finishing second." (Simon Sports Channel YouTube channel, 13 Jan 2021)

CHANGE OF CATEGORIES
He moved up from the 74kg category to 79kg in 2017, and the following year switched to 86kg ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. He also competed in the 92kg class at the 2020 All Japan Championships in Tokyo. "The 79kg class was a safety net for sparring in the 86kg class, as I wouldn't be able to win a power struggle in the 86kg. However, our physical trainer, Isao Matsue, gave a lecture on how to use the body and how to fight, so the action in the 86kg has become quite familiar. I don't think it's a mere dream to win a gold in Tokyo." FURTHER EDUCATION
He has also studied for a postgraduate degree in sports and health system management at the University of Tsukuba in Japan. (Facebook profile, 31 Mar 2020; Twitter profile, 19 May 2021)
