He originally got involved in karate while in primary school and earned a black belt. However, his father encouraged him to take up wrestling alongside his two brothers, who had already competed in the sport. "I wasn't really into wrestling. But there weren't many karate tournaments, so one day I participated in a wrestling tournament. When I won at my first event, my coach told me that I wouldn't be able to quit the sport.
