Her father Takahito competed in wrestling at university level, and was twice champion in the Greco-Roman discipline at the All Japan student championships. Her mother Hatsue represented Japan in the sport at the 1989 World Championships in Martigny, Switzerland, where she finished seventh. Her older sister Risako also competes in wrestling at international level. She won gold in the 63kg category at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
