She initially trained to compete in shot put but an uncle encouraged her to try out weightlifting. "He told me that we were going to the gym, just do some weights and squats. The weightlifting coach saw me lifting, he looked at the other guy and was like, 'I want her'." (abc.net.au, 15 Jul 2019)

General Interest

General
FROM NAURU TO AUSTRALIA
She spent her early childhood in Nauru but was forced to travel to Fiji to seek medical treatment for her mother who had kidney problems. Her mother died in 2009 and three years later her grandparents brought Charisma and her younger sister to Brisbane, QLD, Australia. "My mum went to Fiji to get surgery to have [a kidney] removed, and was waiting for a transplant. Money problems back in Nauru [meant] mum had to be sent back with just one kidney. My grandparents made a promise to my mum that they'd look after us, to get a better life and education." (abc.net.au, 15 Jul 2019)

REPRESENTING AUSTRALIA
In 2019 she decided to switch to representing Australia, having previously competed for Nauru. "I've lived in Australia since I was 13, it's my home and my future. Nauru will always be the place I'll remember, where I was born and raised, it will always have a place in my heart." (iwf.net, 02 Sep 2019; abc.net.au, 15 Jul 2019)
