She was introduced to weightlifting by her brother Javier and encouraged to pursue the sport by her brother's coaches. "I saw how my older brother practised lifting weights every afternoon. I just wanted to accompany him and watch him. His coaches Mayra Hoyos and Walter Llerena asked me if I wanted to train too and I accepted. But then some of my friends told me that weightlifting would change my body and that I was going to look like a man. I came to believe them and I stopped practising for 15 days.
