He played ice hockey during the winter, and was looking for another sport that he could play in summer. "I went to the gym with my grandmother. It was noticeable at a young age that I was naturally very strong. Weightlifting seemed like a sport of strength, but technique is just as important. Bend an inch too much forwards or backwards and you can't bear the weight. I started with fitness exercises at the gym, combined with weightlifting. I had a talent for weightlifting so I started to train seriously." (volksrant.nl, 01 Nov 2020; Athlete, 09 Dec 2017)

General Interest

General
SAVING THE LEGS
He walks as little as possible between training sessions to reduce the amount of stress he puts on his legs, and cycles to training every day instead of walking. "It's only a few hundred metres away, but I have to spare my legs. I'll need it later. When I get home [from training] it's time for ice packs on my knees for recovery. Ten minutes of ice on my knee on and off, three times in total. I always have pain somewhere. That is elite sport, and certainly in weightlifting. This is a pain sport. The point is to recognise the pain and know if I can train through it. In the past I sometimes went too far, that's how injuries occur. I'm getting to know my body better and better." (volksrant.nl, 01 Nov 2020; gelderlander.nl, 26 Feb 2020)

FAMILY BACKGROUND
He was born to a Ghanaian father and a Dutch mother. (trouw.nl, 15 Jul 2020)
