He took up weightlifting in 2012 in Bayaguana, Dominican Republic, after being spotted by coach Daniel Vibieca. "We had that connection from the first moment we crossed paths. I was accepted on a trial basis, and fell in love with the sport from the very first moment. I also liked it because I saw it as the perfect option to gain muscle mass and a good physique, two things I wanted to achieve." (momentodeportivord.com, 01 Mar 2021; elnacional.com.do, 15 Mar 2021)

He was inspired to compete at the Olympic Games after watching compatriots Felix Sanchez and Luguelin Santos win medals at the 2012 Games in London. "I wanted to do it in athletics, but when I went to the track in Bayaguana, it was full of boys and I didn't try. I took up other sports like baseball, taekwondo, wrestling, or karate, but I did not last longer than three months in any of them." (elnacional.com.do, 15 Mar 2021)
