His father Erwin Abdullah represented Indonesia in weightlifting at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, Republic of Korea, winning a silver medal in the 69kg category. His mother Ami Asun Budiono competed in weightlifting at national level and has coached weightlifting for the Sulawesi Selatan province in Indonesia. His parents were elite weightlifters so it was natural for him to take up the sport. "I began practising as a child because I was so proud of my dad [Indonesian weightlifter Erwin Abdullah]. Initially I was trained by my mother [Indonesian weightlifter Ami Asun Budiono] and it went on for almost a year until my father took over. My mother was calmer, my father was stricter." He practised boxing and weightlifting growing up since his grandfather was a boxer and his parents were Indonesian elite weightlifters. In 2015 he thought of switching to boxing after sustaining a waist injury. "The injury was quite bad. I had trained harder and my parents let me since they thought I had reached a proper age for such training. I thought of giving up and resuming with boxing, which was my grandfather's sport. But I didn't give up. My parents were always there for me, and I ended up making the national training squad [for the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia]."
